Selfbuild and Improve Your Home

RingCentral Delivers a User-Friendly and Flexible Cloud
Phone Solution for SelfBuild Ireland

SelfBuild Ireland is a rural and rapidly growing family-run company, specialising in the self-build trade. Its quarterly magazine, SelfBuild and Improve, features articles on practical aspects of design and construction, as well as advice on all aspects of building and improving homes, from doing new extensions and renovations to gaining planning permission to finance, materials, energy issues, and furnishings and fittings. The company’s website,, is focused on providing self-build and home improvement enthusiasts with advice, videos on “how to” and practical case studies, news, and a listing of services that would be useful when self-building or renovating a home. The firm also manages a series of large exhibitions held throughout Ireland dedicated to home improvement, such as the SelfBuild and Improve Your Home Show.

Self-building and improving communications

As a family-run business, SelfBuild Ireland started in its current form in 2001 from the family home, which doubled as an office. As the business grew, the company moved to new offices and warehouses. Located in deep rural County Down in North East Ireland, the company was faced with poor telephone and internet connections for some time. When the National Trust (whose office is nearby SelfBuild Ireland) decided to establish a fibre connection, the company also decided to piggyback on that installation and have a fibre connection extended to their premises, offering a 50-megabytes-reliable internet connection.

When this happened, SelfBuild decided it was time to “self-build their telecommunications” and the company actively started to look at alternatives to their existing BT switchboard system. As Brian Corry, Sales Director at SelfBuild Ireland says, “We were always locked in with the BT phone system. This meant locked in to maintenance contracts, which were not flexible at all, and we did not want to install another hardware system. We actively wanted to move into the cloud, and have a service that would grow with our business.”

SelfBuild Ireland identified RingCentral as a potential supplier. Although the company was warned by competitors that voice over IP solutions like RingCentral were unreliable, SelfBuild decided to undertake its own assessment. Corry says, “We did research into various suppliers and RingCentral came out as the most reliable in terms of service, infrastructure, and back-up. Our phones are critical to our business; if our phones don’t work then 90% of the office can’t do any work. We got several quotes from suppliers, but we chose RingCentral because we were impressed by how user-friendly and flexible the system is in allowing SelfBuild to programme its use to our desired requirements.”

Seamless remote connections

Today, SelfBuild Ireland uses 18 RingCentral numbers to connect its business communications, connecting between any location, any device, and at any time. The system allows SelfBuild to answer, screen, and forward calls with a user-friendly and intuitive interface. In addition, the company uses an international calling package as the firm does two-thirds of its business in the Republic of Ireland.

Corry says, “RingCentral prices were competitive. Now we can add a new line on a whim and when we need it. RingCentral is also very flexible if you have people out in the field and in different locations, as we often do because of events. For example, one of our top salespeople was looking to relocate to England and wanted to continue to work for us. With the RingCentral system, she has successfully worked with us for a year from Telford. It doesn’t matter where you are physically located; she is on the same phone system. This type of flexibility is quite unique and it means that if members of staff have had to take extended periods of time away from the office, the solution enabled them to work from home.”

Mobile flexibility

RingCentral enables SelfBuild to take its business anywhere with the RingCentral mobile app, allowing staff to make or receive calls; send and receive messages and faxes; set up and join conference calls; configure phone system settings, notifications, and voicemail whilst on the move and from their smartphone device. Corry says, “When we are down at events, we use the app on our phones, so we don’t have roaming charges, which is a great benefit. We simply log in to the Wi-Fi and we are able to use the app on our phones, ensuring we don’t incur heavy mobile phone bills, as everything goes through our RingCentral account. Our mobile phones effectively become an extension of our office.”

RingCentral has proved a valuable extension for SelfBuild

For SelfBuild, the single biggest benefit for the business is that RingCentral’s advanced technology delivers a much more lightweight and flexible system, which addresses its business needs. The high reliability of the system helps the business deliver a seamless and integrated service, as calls are routed without customers noticing. “The service is a valuable extension to our business,” says Corry. “Because we are office-based, it is useful to be able to use the RingCentral app at events, divert calls to our mobiles, or use the RingCentral fax app so we don’t have to have a physical fax machine plugged in and can access fax communications on the move. It’s a much more modern and flexible system better suited to our business.”

As the business continues to flourish and grow, SelfBuild relies on the flexibility and scalability RingCentral provides, with the business having the ability to self-provision additional service as and when needed. In the immediate future, SelfBuild will enhance its RingCentral functionality even further by looking to integrate RingCentral into SelfBuild’s CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system. As Corry says, “Already we can use the softphone on the computer and click to dial. And having the ability to have customer details pop up when a customer calls will really help staff. Using RingCentral’s business communications system with an API will allow us to develop this functionality very soon.”
