Vlad Shmunis, Founder and CEO of RingCentral

Vlad Shmunis

CEO, Founder, and Chairman of the Board

Vlad Shmunis founded RingCentral with the idea of using the power of cloud technologies to reimagine business communications solutions. The vision was to deliver solutions that met the need of the rapidly changing business environment of mobile and distributed workforces. This new generation of solutions would enable the modern workforce to communicate, collaborate, and connect from anywhere, on any device using any form of communications. The focus was to deliver more flexible and cost-effective solutions that were totally disruptive to the business of legacy on-premises phone systems that were designed for the old world of voice-only communications using desktop phones in centralized offices.

With the delivery of this new generation of mobility-centric cloud communication solutions, RingCentral unified voice, video, team messaging and collaboration, conferencing, online meetings, and integrated contact center solutions. Today, RingCentral is the #1 cloud communications solutions provider, used by more than 350,000 businesses worldwide. In 2017, Forbes profiled him as a leader in disrupting a unified communications market projected to grow to $143 billion by 2024.

RingCentral is now recognized as the largest and fastest-growing global pure-cloud communications solutions provider and was most recently ranked #1 in cloud communications solutions by Synergy Research in 2017. RingCentral has also been named a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant Unified Communications as a Service Worldwide 2015 and 2016, UCaaS Company of the Year by Frost & Sullivan in 2017, and a leader in the IHS UCaaS scorecard 2017.

Under Shmunis, RingCentral has grown up from a startup company funded in 2006 with a $12 million series A round led by Sequoia and Khosla Ventures to a publicly traded NYSE listed company with nearly $500 million revenue run rate in 2017.

Shmunis is an over 30-year veteran of the software industry. Prior to launching RingCentral, he served as the founder and CEO of Ring Zero Systems, where he pioneered desktop software for business communications software. Ring Zero shipped more than 25 million copies of its software to PC manufacturers, leading to its acquisition by Motorola.

Shmunis holds a bachelor's and master's degree in computer science from San Francisco State University and is a named inventor on a variety of US patents. In 2014, he was named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year™, Northern California Region.
